SlitScan — a time-displacement effect that smears motion across moments

SlitScan rebuilds every frame from many moments at once: each row, column, or ring is sampled from a different point in the recent past, so anything that moves stretches and smears through time. It runs entirely in your browser on webcam, video, or image — nothing is uploaded, and you can preview free before exporting MP4, WebM, or PNG.

What it does

SlitScan keeps a rolling buffer of recent frames and reassembles the picture in strips. Choose Vertical, Horizontal, or Radial direction, then a Depth slider sets how far back in time the effect reaches — bigger depth means longer time-smears. A Curve control (Linear, Wave, Wave2, Center, Edges, Ease, Bounce, Mirror, Reverse) decides which slice of time each strip pulls from, while Offset and Time Scroll shift and animate the whole time map. Smooth mode blends frames continuously with optional Frame Interpolation; Stepped mode locks to discrete frames for a hard, blocky look, and a Strips control lets you go from a single chunky band to a per-pixel scan.

Beyond the core scan, three layers add texture. RGB Time-Split samples the red, green, and blue channels from different moments for a chromatic time-smear, with Time Spread and Split Skew controls. Echo / Ghost overlays up to eight time-lagged passes with adjustable decay, spread, and blend mode (add, screen, or over) for trailing ghosts. In Radial mode you get Ring Rotation, Spiral Twist, and feathered rings for vortex and spiral-warp looks. Finishing controls cover Contrast, Saturation, Mix (blend back toward the source), and a Freeze Buffer toggle. Eight presets — Classic, Time Wave, Chromatic Smear, Ghost Trails, Radial Vortex, Spiral Warp, Datamosh, and Liquid Mirror — set everything at once. Chain it with other effects via Combine, animate it on the keyframe timeline, and export at 9:16, 1:1, or 16:9.

Use it for

  • Music-video and DJ-set visuals where dancers and lights stretch into liquid time-trails
  • Glitch and datamosh-style aesthetics for experimental edits and album art
  • Hypnotic radial vortex and spiral-warp loops for backgrounds and projections
  • Chromatic time-smear intros and transitions for reels and shorts
  • Freeze the time buffer to hold a smeared, time-warped look on a moving clip
  • Ghost-trail body movement clips for dance, sports, or performance footage
